Stone Conservation and Stone Restoration

Having a detailed knowledge of stone enables us to take on all manner of projects from restoring an ancient marble figure and intricate carving work, to large stone replacement, restoration and cleaning contracts. Work can range from traditional lime pointing to full building façade restoration and ecclesiastical projects. Work is always carried out with close liaison with the principal contractor or private client.

Liaising with fellow stonemasons and travelling to quarries in the UK and Europe, the very best stone and associated material is always sourced to the demand and requirements of the client. Using the finest techniques, traditional and modern, and always maintaining the highest standard of work.

Carving / Replacements

When replacing damaged stone for new, the material is carefully selected to ensure a correct and suitable match is achieved and orientation of the stones natural bed depending on its application. Stone is sourced from quarries all over the UK and Europe to achieve the very best match.

Stone Mortar Repairs

This is a method of restoration used when a full replacement stone is not necessary. A specially blended mortar is built up in layers and float finished using a variety of tools to match the texture, colour and profile of the existing stonework. A variety of carefully selected materials are used to gain as close a finished match as possible, with no cement or glues included.

This specialist restoration technique is very effective when restoring spooled or deteriorated stone that is not fractured, but in need of repair and when a budget is limited.

Stucco

Sometimes modern cements, mastics and epoxy resins are used, usually on specialist applications such as stone cladding, cornice and string work. Metal fixings, from simple dowels and cramps to specialist single application fixings, are also used. The precise tolerances necessary make this a highly skilled job.

Traditional Lime Pointing

Lime pointing adds huge benefit to a building façade or ancient wall, as examples, especially when cement has been previously used and is damaging the building material. The determined lime and graded aggregate is applied and finished in a specific process and then allows the mortar to breathe and move reducing the risk of cracking and damage to the faced stone ashlar or brick.
